Hello friends!
Bargaining Update: Power in Solidarity
We held our first-ever open bargaining session this past Thursday afternoon, and the energy in the room was incredible! 35 members showed up to demonstrate support for a bargaining platform that centers on supporting faculty, meeting the goals and values of the college, and honoring the essential work we do to promote student and community success.
What Happened at the Session?
Negotiations Lead, Mindy Williams, presented our core bargaining platform. Our team presented three specific articles for consideration. In contrast, the administration team did not present any articles and offered no substantive questions for our team.
Key Articles Presented
1. Faculty Appointments
We are proposing increased security and professional respect for our adjunct and full-time faculty:
-
For Adjunct Faculty: Reducing the years of service required before becoming eligible for 2-year contracts.
-
Contract Transparency: Writing existing practices into the CBA (such as the May notification deadline for non-renewals).
-
Hiring Equity: Ensuring adjuncts have a right to be interviewed for Full-Time positions for which they apply and are qualified.
-
Probationary Periods: Reducing the probationary period for FT Tenure-track faculty to 3 years (aligning us with Oregon comparison institutions) and reducing FT Temp positions to a 3-year limit.
2. Tenure
We proposed a new article to formally bring Tenure into the CBA—a vital protection that has never been meaningfully included.
-
Consistency: By moving language from the GPM into the CBA, we ensure faculty have a single, accurate source for process and timeline information.
-
Timeline: In coordination with our probationary proposal, new faculty would stand for tenure in their third year.
3. Promotions
We proposed a streamlined, more equitable promotion structure:
-
Three Ranks: Moving from four ranks to three (Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor).
-
Decoupling Salary: Uncoupling the Salary Scale from Promotions so that "stepping" continues annually regardless of promotion status.
-
Automatic Progression: Faculty would start as Assistant Professors, stand for tenure in year three, and be automatically promoted to Associate Professor upon earning tenure.
-
Full Professor & Recognition: After one year as an Associate, faculty may elect to stand for Full Professor. We are proposing a one-time $6,000 bonus upon reaching this rank to recognize excellence.
